Richard Baldwyn ATT, CTA
Director
Nobody likes paying too much tax, so I'll ensure you pay the least amount of tax within the law.
Remember if the bloke down the pub tells you about it and it sounds too good to be true it probably is!
I used to work for the taxman in London before seeing the light and turning away from the dark side...
This means unlike most of our competitors I’ve gained a unique insight into the inner workings of a Tax Inspector’s mind and this will come in particularly handy should you ever have a tax enquiry.
I've achieved many positive results for clients over the years – such as:
During my many years in practice I have dealt with all manner of clients from well-known entertainers and multi-million pound groups of companies to small businesses – including hotels, pubs, restaurants, dentists, doctors, solicitors, surveyors, retailers and even farmers.
I have considerable experience of different types of business structures including sole traders, LLP's, partnerships, owner managed limited companies either stand alone or in a group.
I’m heavily focused on tax planning as well as compliance and I’ll constantly work with you to ensure that your tax bill is kept to a minimum. I have advised clients on a variety of matters, such as tax efficient remuneration strategies, employee share schemes, tax residence, choice of business structure, property tax planning (this list is not exhaustive..).
As you can see from the above, in some cases the tax savings amount to six figures!
I also promise to speak to you in plain English without the jargon (something I learned from dealing with actors and pop stars for many years!).
Qualifications:
Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation
Member of the Association of Taxation Technicians
Outside of work: My favourite hobby is cycling as it keeps me fit and gets me away from my wife and children – a plan with no drawbacks!
But my real passion is music and I always amaze (or is it bore?!) everyone with the breadth of my knowledge!
Favourite film: It's a wonderful life - call me old fashioned but this always brings a lump to my throat
Favourite band: Queen (followed closely by the Eagles - how can you choose between them!)
If I was a fictional character I would be: Jack Reacher - and no, we didn't name our son after him!
Lesley Ward BSC, FCA
Director
I graduated from Warwick University in 1987 with a first class honours degree in Accounting and Financial Analysis – and the realisation dawned that I was a born accountant!
Over the next six years, I obtained invaluable experience working on a diverse selection of clients ranging from sole traders right up to large plcs. My experience also covers many different industries including manufacturing, engineering, retail and services.
I worked in KPMG’s training department developing and delivering training on a wide variety of business related topics (fortunately not just accounting!).
Because I also spent a number of years working in industry (including working as a VP of a division of a major bank and a Finance Director for a subsidiary of a major FTSE 100 company) I understand how a business operates in practice, rather than theory.
I use this knowledge and extensive commercial expertise to add value to the services we provide to clients. When I worked in industry, I transformed a loss making division into a healthy six figure profit within less than 2 years!
Qualifications:
Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales
BSc (First Class Hons) in Accounting and Finance
Outside of work: My favourite hobby is reading which is coupled with my least favourite hobby of going to the gym!
Pet hate: school holidays!
Favourite band: Glen Campbell (OK - not a band but I love him anyway!)
If I was a superhero I would be: Catwoman - OK I'd never wear the outfit but I've got 4 cats!
Julia Storer BSC, AAT
Client Services Manager
Having worked for longer than I care to think about (my first accounting role was all paper based!), I have a diversity of financial and commercial experience ranging from Commercial Administration Manager to Head of Finance.
I have worked in a number of environments including housing, manufacturing, public sector and private practice and use this wide range of knowledge and experience to better understand the variety of businesses and clients we deal with.
As Client Services Manager, I oversee the accounts preparation team and am always on hand to ‘de-mystify’ the accounts process and to help clients understand their business and how it works financially.
Qualifications:
Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians
BSc (Hons) in Engineering Business Development
Outside of work: I have 2 dogs, a mini Basset hound (she’s crossed with a springer spaniel and has ended up looking like a small black and white Basset!) and a Heinz 57 variety with Grinch feet, who I enjoy walking in the beautiful Dorset countryside.
I also love reading and subversive cross stitching!
Favourite band: Guns N’ Roses – have been lucky enough to see them live a couple of times!
Terrified of: Insects, especially swarms of tiny ones – I would not do well in the Jungle!
If I was an animal I would be: A sea otter – because I love the sea not because I eat 25% of my bodyweight a day!
Claire Willatts
Administration Manager
Although my working life didn’t originally start in Administration it was always a big part of my former career.
I graduated from Bournemouth University with an Advanced Diploma in Midwifery and after working in healthcare for a number of years I felt I needed a change, and I found a love for administration and accounts so changed career paths!!
I have worked in an administrative role for The Friendly Accountants since early 2017 and I’m normally one of the first people prospective clients will speak to.
Outside of work: When I’m not working, I’m normally being mum’s taxi for my teenage daughter and supporting her love of dance which we both share (although I tend to watch more than participate these days).
We have a Beaski dog (a husky/beagle cross bred) and a Budgie at home both of which think they are human and need as much attention as my daughter.
Favourite music: I like all kinds of music so have very eclectic tastes ranging from Classical to Rock.
Favourite books, TV and films: I like fantasy adventure films/TV/books so top of my list to watch or read are Star Wars, Marvel, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, The Witcher and The Last Kingdom.
Favourite hobby: I find history fascinating and I’m currently researching my own family tree and learning lots in the small amount of free time a parent gets.

I left school not knowing what to do in life and as a result I have qualifications and experience in many different fields, from equine studies to HGV driving!
Whilst on maternity leave with my first child in 2012, I decided to change direction, and discovered accounting.
I studied with the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers whilst I raised my children and began practicing in the industry in 2014. Since then, I have gained a variety of experience.
I have been a part of The Friendly Accountants team since 2021. I can normally be found processing payroll and completing day to day bookkeeping for clients.
Qualifications:

Outside of work: I am mum to six little boys who keep me very busy with their boundless energy and need for entertainment! I also have a dog who I enjoy taking for walks.
I love art and enjoy painting and drawing when I get the time!
Favourite food: Cheese! Anything with cheese is definitely a winner – bonus if there is wine.
Favourite film: The Accountant or Unbreakable, both are so brilliant that I just can’t choose!
Favourite band: Blink 182 are my all-time favourite; I love the comedy present in most of their music.

I worked in industry as an Assistant Management accountant for a number of years and worked my way up to Management accountant, which provided me with experience in a commercial environment that I use daily to assist our clients with their business.
As Client Services Manager, I oversee the personal tax returns and specialise in the cryptocurrency side of the accounts. I am always available to help clients understand the accounting treatment of cryptocurrency and how these are taxed at the end of the year.
Qualifications:

Favourite band: Muse, I have loved them since 2003 when their Absolution album came out!
Favourite film: Any old musical such as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers or Carousel – definitely old before my time!
My go-to comfort-binge TV show: Friends! I have probably watched the whole series about 10 times now.
